Using Vuforia for virtual controllers in a VR experience

Playing around with the Vuforia AR/VR demo got me to thinking that Vuforia would be great for creating controllers for Google Cardboard VR experiences. Oculus, Vive, and Samsung have all announced their own controllers, but I was thinking that with Vuforia Image Targets and virtual buttons you could make some pretty nifty controllers for Cardboard, at least for testing out interaction ideas.
