How does input work with lower cost mobile VR?

I have a google cardboard setup (actually made of cardboard), and I have another better made headset but still lower cost. There's no buttons though and my phone is basically inserted inside the devices, so I'm unable to press any area of the screen or any external phone buttons.

So how does player input actually work?
