Deploying Unity native VR to anything other than Oculus or Samsung GearVR possible?

I've been trying to deploy a testproject to an Android Device that is not an S6 or other GearVR Samsung Device. I have tried to use a Samsung S3, an LG G3 and Nexus 10 just to see if it works.
I've tried setting the device type to Split and Stereo via Script (with VRSettings.loadedDevice=VRDeviceType.Split;).
I also started the Unity Editor in different VR modes but I am not sure if these transfer over when building the project for android. All in all the documentation seems to leave room...
