Custom HMD, setting IPD

We have a new head mounted display and are sending content out from Unity via openVR. However, the IPD between the two eyes is way off. How do I set and adjust in real-time the IPD between what's rendered in each eye?

I have read that the way to do it is to place the camera in a parent game object and scale the parent. Is there a baseline 65 mm IPD assumed - so that, e.g., if I scale to 1.1, it will increase the IPD by 10% (6.5mm)? Also, do you scale the parent in just the x-axis or in...
