Is motion control development difficult?

I'm with Oculus so I haven't got my Oculus Touch controllers yet, so I'm wondering how hard is it to get started with using motion controls?

If you were to install the SteamVR API right now, would it be instantly set up with a few Unity setting changes, just like the HMD, therefore rendering the vive controllers in a scene? Or is it more complicated than that?

Am I right to assume that the simplest approach for picking up objects would be detecting a collision between it and the vive...
